We’ve previously written about how the Maserati Ghibli is not an entry-level vehicle. Compared with the rest of the maker’s portfolio, the Ghibli is unquestionably the most affordable option, but entry-level vehicles do no perform the way this car performs, they don’t move like this car moves, and they don’t sound like this car sounds. Superior Performance Born from Superior Technology
Under the hood, the Ghibli boasts a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The same can be said for both the basic model and the upgraded Ghibli S Q4, but there are subtle differences in each engine that effect output.
The regular Ghibli’s engine features specially crafted camshaft and injectors that, combined with a custom electronic control system, cut down on fuel consumption. This modification doesn’t negatively affect throttle response or power output. It still produces a staggering 345 horsepower and tops out at 369 lb-ft of torque while in Sport mode. Together, those figures propel the Ghibli from naught to 60 in only 5.5 seconds.
If you care more about power than fuel efficiency, then maybe you will want to consider the Ghibli S Q4. In that case, you’ll enjoy an engine with twin parallel-mounted, low-inertia turbines, designed to prevent turbo lag and maximize responsiveness. The S Q4 musters 404 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque with Sport mode engaged.
Both vehicles are equipped with the latest 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF, capable of precise gear shifts and rapid change of pace. The Ghibli S Q4 goes a step further with Maserati’s innovative “on demand” all-wheel drive. This system sends all power to the rear wheels under normal circumstances, but as road conditions change for the worse, it can equalize power among all four wheels in just 150 milliseconds. It goes to show that extra safety should accompany extra speed.
